Sabrina swung around to see who had come into her office. Her grasp on the telephone receiver tightened as she looked into Art's face. Art asked if he should come back. Sabrina motioned for Art to take a seat as she spoke into the phone; "I'll have to get back to you later this afternoon." After the phone was returned to the cradle she said: "Art you gave me a startle. I thought you might have been Randy." Art laughed and asked her if she were busy giving away Randy's trade secrets. Sabrina thought for a moment and decided she trusted Art enough to confide; " No Art, I was speaking with a recruiter about an opportunity with Carhart Foods while I was eating my lunch."
Sabrina enjoyed her work as the Product Development Manager for PET Containers. She worked closely with Art who was the Marketing Manager. She had come to respect Art as a Christian who walked the walk in his business dealings at PET. They often shared parts of their faith journey with each other at lunch. Lately parts of these lunch discussions had drifted toward the secular topic of reorganization. Art had shared that the company's focus and direction for the next 12-18 months would be to prepare the company for sale. This meant less focus on new product development and more on cost control. At 48 years of age and 25 years in the packaging business, Sabrina knew that time was not on her side. She had begun to make a few calls on her lunch hour. In fact she found herself coming in early to fax copies of her resume prior to beginning her workday.
Art took a deep breath and asked Sabrina if he could share a personal thought with her. She nodded in the affirmative. He told Sabrina that she was taking a great risk. She broke him off and said that all of the calls were during her lunch or before work; and after all, the company's phone plan was a negotiated flat amount rather than by the minute. He looked into her eyes and asked: "You do know that what you are doing is a sin don't you?" Sabrina was stunned. In the silence between them she thought, "how can a few calls on my own time be a sin? This is costing the company nothing." She stopped, took a breath, and asked Art what was wrong.
You're Art. What do you have to share?
